Vintage Finds Meets Modern Designs – Introducing Honey Rose & K

In February 2009, Meredith turned her hobby into her profession. She started her jewelry label Honey Rose & K, which is named after Meredith’s Grandmother, Honey Rosenkranz. Meredith finds her inspiration in traveling,  art, photography, and her Grandmother’s jewels. Each handmade piece is made out of vintage finds and combined with modern elements, to give the jewelry a modern bohemian, edgy twist.

What inspired you to be a designer and how did you get started?

I began by playing with my Grandmother Honey’s costume jewelry and recreating the pieces to feel modern and wearable today. I’ve always enjoyed creating and have a background in fashion and business so it was natural for me to start my own line.

Where were you born, where have you lived most of your life, and how has this influenced your brand?

I was born in Canton, Ohio and have lived in Ohio most of my life. I went to college in the South and also lived in Atlanta. I don’t think where I live influenced my line as much as my parents and Grandmother who are/were creative people in my life.

Describe your day in the life?

I have two small children so my day begins with getting them off to school and coffee! I start my work with coffee, checking email/social media and move on to processing online orders. I work with PR in LA so some days I’m doing editorial pulls, I’m always making new pieces or sourcing new materials. I also spend a good deal of time at my photographers shooting new material. I do everything from marketing emails to digging at flea markets and thrift stores.

What materials do you use and where do you source them?

I use 90% vintage and 10% modern. My modern materials come from a variety of US suppliers and furriers for antlers and porcupine quills. My vintage comes from thrift stores, antique malls, estate sales and flea markets.
It’s important for me to be eco-friendly and gentle to mother Earth. It’s what we stand for.

What gets your creative juices flowing? Are you an early-bird or a night owl? What songs are you listening to, what munchies are you snacking on? What are you wearing?

I love to travel and that really inspires me! I’m always inspired by the runway trends and each season brings new excitement.

I’m more of a night owl, I love to sleeping in!

I always have Van Morrison radio and Fleetwood Mac playing on Pandora but I can enjoy a good night out dancing too, so anything that has some energy!

I’m snacking on almonds and anything low carb. I get more energy from protein.

I’m wearing comfort for the day since I’m working in a chair, on the floor, etc. For evening I love a good boho blouse, wide leg jeans and boots. My style is exactly like what I design.

Describe the first piece you ever designed…

I began with repurposing vintage silk scarves so I was using Chanel and DVF scarves to make braided necklaces and eternity scarves.

Who is your mentor?

I turn to my Dad and my husband for business advice and I love a good tea session with my design friends at One Six Five Jewelry. We bounce ideas off each other once a month and share what’s working, etc.

How would you describe your personal style, both wardrobe and home decor?

My home is a mix of mid century modern and modern with touches of fur, hyde and skulls. My clothing style is a mix of boho and modern. I’m short so it’s not easy to pull off boho head to toe and sometimes I prefer to just wear all black everything.

What advice would you give to up & coming designers that want to start their own brand?

Be prepared to wear all hats of the business and do what you can with what you have. Also have a stance on what your business means to you and what you stand for.

What’s next for you?

Right now we’re working on reaching more stores and increasing the online traffic so more people can find us. I want to be a leader in the Eco-friendly jewelry world!
